Substack

The inbox is the interface — email-first posts with a quiet reader as backup.

Substack's interface insight is that the newsletter, not a feed, is the primary surface. A post is written once and delivered as email, then mirrored on a clean web page and inside an in-app reader, so the inbox does the work most apps build a feed to do. The writing editor is deliberately spare, nudging toward prose over layout fiddling, with the paid-subscriber paywall dropping in as a simple inline break partway down a post. Subscribe and pledge buttons are blunt and ever-present. As the app has bolted on Notes, a short-form social feed, and recommendations, the original calm has eroded; the home tab now competes with the email-first model that made it distinctive, pulling writers toward engagement mechanics they signed up to avoid.
