Slack

Channel sidebar plus threads that fork conversation off the main flow.

Slack's defining move is the left rail: a sectioned list of channels and DMs that doubles as both navigation and unread-state map, with bolded names and badge counts pulling the eye. Threads were bolted on later and it shows. A reply can live in the thread, the channel, or both, and the "also send to channel" checkbox quietly decides who sees it. That ambiguity is Slack's signature failure mode: important context hides one click deep while the main flow fills with noise. Presence dots, typing indicators, and the composer's slash-command menu make the room feel live. The keyboard-first quick switcher is the power-user spine, letting you jump anywhere without ever touching the sidebar you spent so long arranging.
