Etsy works hard to feel like a craft fair while running marketplace mechanics underneath. Listings favor large, styled photography in a soft grid, and the personality of individual shops comes through in cover images and policies. But the search experience strains against its own catalog: variation selectors (size, color, personalization) are inconsistent shop to shop, and the same query surfaces genuine makers beside drop-shipped resellers, which the interface does little to distinguish. Favorites and curated "editor's picks" collections lean into browsing for the undefined. The cart spans multiple independent sellers, so shipping and policies fragment at checkout. Star ratings and review photos carry most of the trust weight. It's a discovery-driven shop bolted onto thousands of inconsistent storefronts.
