UX Clarity Framework

The TYPENORM UX Clarity Framework: a structured approach to measuring, diagnosing, and improving UX clarity across digital products

What is the UX Clarity Framework?

The UX Clarity Framework is TYPENORM's structured methodology for evaluating and improving the clarity of digital user experiences. It provides a consistent language, process, and scoring system for teams who want to make UX quality measurable.

The Six Dimensions of UX Clarity

1. Navigation Clarity

Can users predict where they are and where they can go? This dimension evaluates menu structure, labeling, and wayfinding.

2. Microcopy Quality

Does every label, button, error message, and tooltip communicate clearly? This covers tone, specificity, and user-centric language.

3. Visual Hierarchy

Does the visual layout guide the user's eye to the most important information? This covers typography, spacing, and contrast.

4. Error Recovery

When things go wrong, does the interface help users recover quickly and confidently? This covers error states, feedback loops, and recovery paths.

5. Trust Signals

Does the interface communicate security, reliability, and transparency? This covers social proof, data handling transparency, and status communication.

6. Onboarding Completeness

Does the first-use experience set users up for success? This covers progressive disclosure, orientation, and first-value delivery. To review one onboarding journey in depth, use the 5L UX Onboarding Flow.

How to Apply the Framework

  1. Audit — Review your product against each of the six dimensions using the TYPENORM audit rubric
  2. Score — Rate each dimension 1–10
  3. Prioritize — Focus on the lowest-scoring dimensions with the highest user impact
  4. Fix — Implement targeted improvements
  5. Re-audit — Measure the impact of changes

Getting Started

Request a UX Audit from TYPENORMLabs to have our team apply the UX Clarity Framework to your product, or apply for a free UX Snapshot to get started.

To locate friction within a specific journey, use the Frictions Map.

To trace a fix from the research behind it to the evaluation that checks it, use the Research-to-Design Loop.

The framework diagnoses and scores clarity across a product. To decide what to do about one problem it finds and align the team on that decision, use the UX Clarity Canvas.

Put this framework to work

We teach and apply our frameworks with product teams — in a facilitated workshop or through ongoing consulting.
