Snapchat opens directly into the camera. That single decision defines the whole interface: there is no feed to land on, the capture surface is the home, and you swipe outward in four directions to reach chat, Stories, the Snap Map, and Discover. It privileges creation over consumption in a way nothing else does. The ephemerality is structural, not a setting. Snaps disappear after viewing, Stories expire in a day, and the open-then-vanish rhythm shapes how people use it. The deliberately undiscoverable gestures, press-and-hold to view, swipe-up for context, hidden menus, function as a generational filter; the learning curve is the point. Streaks gamify daily contact into an obligation. It is one of the few apps where the camera, not a list, is the navigational center of gravity.

The camera screen is busy with creative tools. Lenses appear in a carousel beside the shutter button, and a right-hand toolbar holds the flash, timer, filters, dual camera and music. After taking a Snap, the editing screen adds text, stickers, drawings and links before the send-to list, where friends, Stories and the public Spotlight feed all appear as destinations. The path from capture to sharing is short and sits almost entirely on one screen.

Chat leans on small signals that other messengers do not show. A coloured icon tells you whether a friend has opened your Snap, saved a chat, or taken a screenshot, and Bitmoji avatars appear in conversations and on the Snap Map. Friends are sorted by recent contact rather than alphabetically, which keeps the people you talk to most within easy reach and makes the friend list a record of activity.

Snapchat+ adds paid features such as custom app icons, a story rewatch indicator and early access to experiments, and the My AI chatbot sits at the top of the chat list. Spotlight, the short-video feed, pulls the app toward the endless scrolling it once avoided. Each change tests how far the camera-first identity can stretch before the app becomes another feed-driven social network.
