Character.AI wraps the chat window in persona. You enter through a gallery of user-made characters, each a card with an avatar, greeting, and creator, and the conversation that follows is styled to feel like messaging that character rather than querying a model. The signature interaction is swiping: every bot reply can be regenerated into alternate versions you page through left and right, picking the take you like and steering the scene. A character editor lets anyone define a personality, greeting, and example dialogue through plain form fields. The framing is immersive but deliberately thin on transparency. There is no surfaced system prompt and little seam between roleplay and the model underneath, which is the point for fans and a real legibility cost for everyone else.

Character.AI's discovery page reads like a streaming catalogue. Rows of featured, recommended and trending characters run across the screen, each card showing how many interactions it has had, and a search box finds characters by name or theme. The cards treat a chatbot like a piece of media you pick from a shelf, and the interaction count works as the social proof that a play count would elsewhere.

Inside a chat, the controls that matter are small and close to the message. Replies can be rated with stars, which feeds back into the model's behaviour for that conversation, and a pinned-message feature keeps important details in view as the chat grows. Voice calls with a character and generated voices extend the persona beyond text, and the conversation history list makes each character feel like a contact you return to.

Safety notices are part of the interface rather than a separate policy page. A line under the chat reminds the user that the character is not a real person and that everything it says is made up, and the company has added time-spent notifications and separate experiences for younger users. The tension is visible in the product: the more convincing the persona, the more the interface has to remind people what they are talking to.
