UX Collective
The biggest design publication on the internet, built entirely on a platform it doesn't own — and quietly racing that platform for the reader
UX Collective is the largest independent design publication going, and it is a curation brand wearing Medium's clothes. Open any of its pages and the masthead says 'UX Collective' — 'Stories for designers—thinkers and makers,' 617K followers, two editors — but the chrome around it is pure Medium: the Medium wordmark top-left, a Sign up button, a Sign in link, the whole account-acquisition apparatus of a platform that wants every one of those 617K readers as its own login. That tension is the entire story of this flow. UX Collective owns the taste — the editorial eye that picks which designer essays lead — but not the infrastructure, the paywall, or the reader relationship. Everything it does is shaped by that split. The homepage curates a front page Medium would never assemble on its own; the tag archives are Medium's native furniture (filters, 'Added 12h ago,' member-metered reads) with UXC's name bolted on top. And the one navigation item that matters most — 'Receive our Newsletter' — is the escape hatch: the newsletter is the only audience UXC actually owns outright, the readers Medium can't convert away. Read end to end, the flow is a masterclass in building a media brand on rented land, and in the single move that makes it survivable: get the reader onto a channel you control before the platform underneath you captures them first.
