Copilot grew out of a search box, and the seams show in useful ways. Answers cite web pages inline and often surface image thumbnails and source cards drawn straight from the index, so a question about a product or place returns something closer to an annotated results page than plain prose. After each reply it offers tappable suggested-question chips that keep a conversation moving without retyping. Across Microsoft's surfaces the same assistant appears docked in a side panel beside whatever app you're in. Identity is the unresolved problem: bolted onto a browser and an OS, Copilot frequently feels like a feature visiting from somewhere else rather than a place of its own, and its behavior shifts depending on which window it has been embedded into.
