iOS made a grid of app icons the default mental model for touch computing: tap to open, press-and-hold to enter a jiggling edit mode, swipe between pages. Control Center, pulled from a screen corner, gathers the toggles people change most, separating quick switches from the deep Settings app. Notifications stack on the lock screen and pull down from the top, caught in a long-running tension between glanceability and clutter. The back gesture lives at the screen edge, and the home indicator replaced the physical button without leaving a visible target to aim at. The system trades flexibility for legibility: widgets and an App Library added structure only slowly, and the rigid grid stays approachable precisely because it refuses most of the customization that power users keep asking for.
