Airtable's central trick is making a database feel like a spreadsheet you already know: rows become records, columns become typed fields, and a familiar grid hides relational structure underneath. Cells hold more than text — attachments, links to other tables, single-selects with colored chips — so the grid quietly becomes a data model. Views are the key idea: the same records reproject as grid, calendar, kanban, or gallery, each with its own filters and sort, so different roles read one dataset their own way. Expanding a record opens a focused, form-like card that separates scanning from editing. Linked records turn flat tables into a connected base. The trade is that scale and logic eventually outgrow the spreadsheet metaphor, pushing teams toward automations and a steeper conceptual model.
