Discord

Server, channel, and member columns with always-on voice rooms.

Discord stacks three vertical columns: a server icon rail, a channel list, and a member roster, an information architecture that scales from a two-person call to a hundred-thousand-member community. Its real innovation is treating voice as a place, not an event. You click a voice channel and you're simply in it, no ring, no invite, with people drifting in and out the way they would a room. Roles drive color-coded names and granular per-channel permissions, giving moderators fine control but burying newcomers under setup. The member list's online grouping makes presence ambient and social. Discord also leans hard on reactions and inline replies, so a single message can sprout dozens of emoji tallies that read as a lightweight, legible vote.
